Cyndi Lauper in 250 words (ish)
Cyndi Lauper (Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper) is an American singer songwriter born in 1953. As a child Lauper listened to artists like The Beatles
and at the age of 12 she started writing songs and playing the guitar.
In the UK Cyndi peaked at No.2 in 1984 with ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ and at No.3 with ‘Time After Time’. Her studio album ’Twelve Deadly Sins… And Then Some’ reached No.2 on the UK Album Charts in 1994.
Lauper released 11 studio albums, 33 music videos and 51 singles. She has sold over 50 million records world wide. ‘She’s So Unusual’ was Lauper's debut album released in 1983 and contained 6 singles including ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’ which is a cover of the Robert Hazard song first recorded in 1979. ‘Time After Time’ also featured on her debut album, written by herself and Rob Hyman who sung backing vocals on the vocals.
‘The Goonies’ released in 1985 features music by Lauper and she had a cameo in the film. She has also starred in many TV shows and films including ‘Bones’, ‘Mad About You’ and ‘The Opportunists’.
In 2012 she released the hit musical ‘Kinky Boots’ which has successfully toured the USA, UK and Australia.
In 2013 the musical won 6 Tony Awards including the award for Best Original Score. Lauper has won two Grammy Awards, one Emmy Award and one MTV Video Music Award. Cyndi is ranked at No.58 on the 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll.
