Shirley Bassey is a Welsh alto from Cardiff. She is well known for recording 3 James Bond title songs. ‘Goldfinger’ (1964), ‘Diamonds are Forever’ (1971) and ‘Moonraker’ (1979). She is the only artist to record more than one James Bond title song. She also recorded a version of ‘Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’ for ‘Thunderball’.
In the UK, Bassey has had 2 No.1 singles ‘As I Love You’ (1958) and ‘Reach for the Stars/Climb Ev’ry Mountain’ (1961). She had 10 hits in the UK top 10. She has also had 7 top 10 albums including ‘Something’ (1970), ‘Something Else’ (1971) and ‘Get the Party started’ (2007).
Bassey released 37 studio albums, 6 live albums and a massive 105 singles. ‘I Am What I Am’ released in 1984 has reached Gold certification, ‘25th Anniversary Album’ released in 1978 reached Platinum certification, ‘The Performance’ released in 2009 has reached Gold certification. She will be releasing ‘I Owe It All to You’ in November 2020 with Decca Records.
Bassey had a Saturday night BBC TV show called ‘Shirley Bassey’ which ran for 2 series. She has also 20 BBC TV specials dating from 1957-2009.
In 1959 and 1960 she was voted favourite British female singer, in 1976 she received an EMI award for twenty years as a UK recording artist and in 1977 was awarded a Brit Award for Best Female Solo Artist in the previous 25 years.
In 2000 Bassey was awarded with a DBE and in 2008 ‘Goldfinger’ was introduced into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2019 Bassey’s handprints were unveiled at the SSE Arena in London.

Our Feel Good Team is made up of staff from Essex Partnership University Trust (EPUT) and Classic Hits Forest Radio who have worked collaboratively to bring this project together. EPUT West Essex Integrated Community Physical and Mental Health teams joined together to develop a range of helpful soundbites to advise and support health promotion strategies for listeners.
