Nat King Cole (1919-1965) was an American jazz pianist and singer born in Alabama. Cole’s mother, Perlina Cole, taught him the organ from a young age. When he was 12, he started learning the piano and explored genres like jazz, gospel and classical.
When Cole was 15, he dropped out of high school and pursued a career in music and in 1937 he moved to Los Angeles where he led a big band and played jazz in night clubs. His first hit was in 1940 with ‘Sweet Lorraine’.
Cole released 28 studio albums and had 15 singles in the top 10 UK singles charts. ‘Love is the Thing’ (1957) reached No.1 on the UK albums charts and spent 14 weeks in the top 10. Some of his best-known hits are ‘Smile’ (1954), ‘When I Fall in Love’ (1957) and ‘Ramblin’ Rose’ (1962). His last album before his death was ‘L-O-V-E’ released in 1964.
In 1956, Cole hosted The Nat King Cole Show which in total aired 42 episodes on NBC and featured in films like ‘Breakfast in Hollywood’ (1946), ‘The Blue Gardenia’ (1953) and ‘The Scarlet Hour’ (1956).
Cole was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990 and was featured on an American postage in stamp in 1994. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was enrolled into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.
